Hair loss is fast becoming a common problem among people of different ages. The primary causes to this problem are aging, change in hormones or any family history of baldness. It is seen that as earlier the hair loss begins, the more severe baldness becomes. There are other causes of hair loss like burns or trauma, where a patient might go for a replacement surgery considered as a reconstructive treatment. The hair transplant procedure can be performed on the scalp, beard, eyebrows and mustache area of the face enhancing the overall appearance and self-confidence of a person.
The most popular hair transplant techniques adopted are FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and strip grafts. Under strip harvesting technique, a strip of skin is taken from posterior scalp i.e. an area of good hair growth while individual follicular units are removed under FUE. The part of the body from where follicular units are harvested is the donor site and the balding part is the recipient site. The surgery is performed on candidates desiring a modest change in hair fullness. For candidates desiring a dramatic change usually are advised to have flaps, tissue-expansion or scalp-reduction procedure which would be more appropriately suited to them as it creates a fuller hair appearance by reducing or moving the scalp.
After the hair transplant surgery, the scalp gets very tender and the patient witnesses the transplanted hair falling off the scalp as new growth is witnessed in next few months. Surgeons prescribe a surgical dress to be worn over the scalp for a day or two and antibiotic or anti-inflammatory drug to be taken for several days after the surgery.
